This was easier than I thought it would be.. thankfully. The whole idea of walking up to my car and sticking the key in the door is positively middle ages barbaric.
Amazon has any number of "Universal Remotes" so for me the trick was buying one that looked period correct. No point in more than 2 buttons - so this one was my selection.
Documentation was reasonably adequate. This has a couple of different modes of operation. It can be configured to either send 12 volts or open / close a circuit.
The trick here is that the Z3 has an unused connector behind the glove compartment door with all the connections needed to wire this up. If you're poking around BMW wiring diagrams, I believe it is referenced as the Alarm Connector.. for which I found this handy doc online.
